Best Friends Animal Society is the only national animal welfare organization focused exclusively on saving the lives of dogs and cats in America’s shelters. We are huge advocates of adopting shelter pets. All of ours have come from local dog shelters or pounds.   We even donate food and treats to our local shelters!

Pets are very much part of your lives, they are the ones who curl up against you when you are sick, stare at you with sad eyes when you cry, show unconditional love, get excited to see you whenever you walk through the door. As they start to age, you see the gray in their muzzle, the gray around their eyes, a little less pep in their step, but still full of love for you.

After the passing of one of our older dogs our other pooch seemed lonely and depressed.  I went to the Dog Warden one day on my lunch break and walked the rooms of all the dogs.  It is honestly heartbreaking how many dogs are abandoned, given up, lost, etc. that show up at shelters.   As I walked the rooms, I was drawn back to one girl.  Those warm brown eyes just wanted someone to love her.   She came in with her brother malnourished and scared. She  just needed someone to  love her, a good home and proper care. She was about 4 months.

It will be a year next month that Roxy came into our lives and into our hearts.   She is the protector of the kids, sleeps with our daughter every night, gives sloppy wet kisses,  army crawls across the floor, but most of all a member of our family!    Shelter pets are the best bests, you are not just saving them you are inviting them into your family.  Sometimes one needs to wonder who adopted who!
