As part of
the Alamo
Insiders program, I am going to list five
summer getaways every kid should experience ! School is
almost out and it’s time for summer getaways that mean big fun for the entire
family. Since this is a frugal/money
saving blog, I am going to high light some fun and frugal ideas for the family
this summer.
1.
Fishing
/Camping/Hiking – We love to spend time as a family outside. Most State parks are free to get into, and
there are minimal charges for camping.
Some of our greatest memories are on the hiking trails. We also make it an education experience and
teach the children about their surroundings.
No State park or campground nearby?
Well that is ok, just set up the tent in the backyard and rough it! That means, no TV, running inside, etc. You
and the kids will have to just entertain yourselves in the back yard and learn
how much fun your backyard has to offer.
Don’t forget fishing, it is also a fun treat and an educational
experience all in one!
2.
Visit
a local historical site! Growing up, I
lived in a very historical town. We
would visit the old buildings, forts, cemeteries, etc. Now where we live, it is just as historical
and there are so many fun things to do.
Head on over to your local Chamber of Commerce of visitors center and
see what they have to offer, you many learn of something new in the area.
3.
Museums. Did you know that some museums have certain
days a month that visitors can get in for free! Even if the museums in the area are not
free, they are still reasonable. Take
the kids the art museum and hand each one a drawing pad and pencil and let them
sketch what they see. Head on over to a
hands on/children’s museum and watch them have hours of fun exploring and
learning.
4.
Amusement
parks. I know we all dream of trips to
Disney, but we all cannot afford such a trip.
Most states have amusement parks and they are a fraction of the cost of
a Disney ticket. Plus with summer right
around the corner, there will be deals on tickets or even check out AAA for
discount tickets. Even if you spend $35
a ticket, just think of it as an all day event and it is so worth it! Even if you are there for 8 hours, that is just
$7 an hour, not a bad deal!
5.
Zoos.
We purchase zoo memberships every year.
Depending on where you get a membership though, you can score a
membership for $50-75. If you think of
how it is $8-10 a person to get into the zoo each time and if you have a family
of 4, in two visits you have made up for the cost. Plus some memberships have reciprocal agreements
with other zoos and museums! So you can
possible get into out ones at a reduced rate or free. We take zoo vacations and hit all the local
zoos. The one thing about zoos is they
never get old and there is always something new to see!
Fun doesn’t have to cost money,
and if you remember back to your childhood, I bet some of your favorite
memories where doing some of the above mentioned!
