Oogy: The Dog Only a Family Could Love by Larry Levin (Giveaway & Review)

From the Publisher:
In the bestselling tradition of Rescuing Sprite comes the story of a puppy brought back from the brink of death, and the family he adopted.

In 2002, Larry Levin and his twin sons, Dan and Noah, took their terminally ill cat to the Ardmore Animal Hospital outside Philadelphia to have the beloved pet put to sleep. What would begin as a terrible day suddenly got brighter as the ugliest dog they had ever seen--one who was missing an ear and had half his face covered in scar tissue--ran up to them and captured their hearts. The dog had been used as bait for fighting dogs when he was just a few months old. He had been thrown in a cage and left to die until the police rescued him and the staff at Ardmore Animal Hospital saved his life. The Levins, whose sons are themselves adopted, were unable to resist Oogy's charms, and decided to take him home.

Heartwarming and redemptive, OOGY is the story of the people who were determined to rescue this dog against all odds, and of the family who took him home, named him "Oogy" (an affectionate derivative of ugly), and made him one of their own.

 My review:

I am an avid book reader.   I can bust out a book in a night if I don't put it down, so I am always looking for something new to read.   I was recently sent an advance reading copy of Oogy:   The Dog Only a Family Could Love by Larry Levin. I expected to read a story about an amazing dog, what I had no idea  how extraordinary Oogy was and his family.  I got quiet emotional reading this book.  I have not cried while reading in a long time.  I don't want to give too much away, but it is a one-in-a million tale.  Oogy was a fighting dog who would not fight and because of that he changed the lives of everyone around him.  Oogy is proof that good things can come out of horrific tragedy and is a must read for animal lovers everywhere!

  1. I've rescued a cat before. He was pitiful, his owner had died and he was left alone. He was so tiny and adorable. I took him home and he quickly settled in to our home. I wish that we could have taken them all home but at least we could rescue the one that we did.

  2. When I was a child, we rescued Lucky, an English Setter, from a horrible divorce situation. He was the only one in his litter to survive and had Mange so badly when we rescued him that he had no hair at all and we weren't allowed to even touch him. We nursed him back to health and he became a great pet and even enjoyed hunting Quail with my dad. Unfortunately, when he was a few years old, we found out that he had a degenerative muscle disease. He lived to be about 9 years old.

  5. When I had just turned eight, my family adopted a dog from the Humane Society. I named her Sadie. She seemed perfectly fine and healthy, but we soon discovered that she was afraid of loud noises (including raised voices) and sudden movements, which made us think that she could have been abused in the past. Well, that's a long time in the past - Sadie is now thirteen years old, and, as Mom's youngest "daughter," is happily spoiled rotten :)

  6. I have never rescued an animal from the SPCA, however, I did adopt a 6 year old Ragdoll cat from a family in Turkey. (YES, VERY FAR!) The cat was on a plane for 2 days, and I've had him for quite some time now. He is my favorite pet ever!

  9. Yes all my past animals have been rescue pets! I'm a strong believer in adopting animals in need. My current princess is a 4 year old boston terrier/daschund mix named Lolo I got her when she was 5 mos. from a humane society that rescued her and a bunch of others from a really bad situation at a puppy mill, she was scared of everything and so small when I got her, now she is happy and a spoiled princess :) and has brought so much joy to my life, I couldn't imagine my life without her!

This book sounds so touching, Thanks for the chance into this giveaway.

  10. I rescued a pet from the pound when I lived in Texas, but she died in seven short days of liver damage from flea & tick infestation. I adopted her because she reminded me of one of my first pets, and I loved her for the few days we were together. It was a horrible experience to go through. *Thanks* for the giveaway!

  13. I have an adorable white Pekineses that is approximately 4 years old...she showed up about 3 weeks ago on my neighbors porch! I tried to find her owners but no one has claimed her. Soooo she now lives with us. She is the perfect pooch except for all the hair!
We called her Licky because she licks non stop.
We are all attached to her now!

  14. Susan - that's an awesome story and I have two pekes mylsef (one of them is white).

We found a very skinny dog wandering our road like he had come out of the woods about 2 months ago. We tried to find an owner, but to no avail. He's a very old dog and we were afraid he might not find a home (he's also pretty scruffy looking - which is why we named him scruffy) so we decided to keep him. He's now just one of the boys at our house!
